A Reality Check for Bloggers
It’s hard to be to an optimist parent when you really hate the world around you at times. Here’s an article about a woman who has recently decided to shut down her blog. I don’t quite follow what event precipitated the wicked misogynistic backlash she’s been enduring (a photograph with a politician??) but it’s the reaction that I’m most concerned about.
I’m ashamed of my gender when I hear about these kinds of stories. And I fear what kind of world Daughter will be entering. I realize the ass holes that are at the heart of the above mentioned issue do not reflect the majority of us but when it’s all said and done, they do so much damage and disturb so many innocent people who really don’t deserve any of this. I wonder how long it will take before a vigilante movement of ‘Blog Defenders’ form, tracing IP addresses of cruel anonymous, digging up more information on them and going to town with divulging ~their~ personal information to the world? I’d definitely give that movement a donation every year
So there it is; bloggers, remember to try and mask your identity as much as you can in terms of your online presence. If you make a statement, political or not and some ignorant, holier-than-thou shit head decides that you should be punished…well…they could find where you live or work or your full name (to get things like your SIN number) or something else that would allow them to find out more of your personal secrets and basically make your life a living hell.
